Audition for QL2 Dance project in Canberra

QL2 Dance Audition Canberra AustraliaQL2 Dance in Canberra will soon provide an opportunity for young dancers ages 8–17 to work with great choreographers, contribute ideas and perform in a new show. The Australian youth dance organisation will host an audition for its new Not Like The Others performance project on Sunday, August 13. All candidates must register by Thursday, August 3.

Not Like The Others will be about difference, asking questions like, “How similar are we really, and how much does it matter?” Project participants will help create a full-length dance work over six weeks with lots of other young dancers. It will be developed at QL2 Dance’s studios at Gorman Arts Centre and will be performed at Theatre 3 in Acton.

Three choreographers, all previously participants at QL2 Dance, will work with students. First, Alison Plevey will be artistic director of the project as she is the acting artistic director of QL2 Dance in September and October while Ruth Osborne is away on a Churchill Fellowship study tour. Plevey is a teacher, dance and physical theatre artist, creator and improviser. She’s the co-director of physical theatre company Lingua Franca and is a leader of Canberra’s new Australian Dance Party.

Stephen Gow, the second choreographer for Not Like The Others, is a hip-hop, contemporary, acrobatics and breakdancing teacher and performer. He’s also a member of street dance crew Beat the Streets. He’s previously toured with Cypher, a b-boy theatre show created by Nick Power.

The third choreographer for Not Like The Others is Jack Riley, a recent VCA graduate and former elite Judo competitor. He recently worked on Tasdance’s new collaboration Fragile Matter and the Australian Opera’s King Roger. He has presented his own work Contact as part of a residency at QL2 Dance.

Performances of Not Like The Others will be October 13 and 14.
