Melbourne City Ballet presents ‘Napoli’

Melbourne City Ballet presents ‘Napoli’The full-length ballet Napoli will be presented in Australia for the first time in more than 40 years next month! The Melbourne City Ballet starts its 2016 season by delivering this challenging August Bournonville classic as remastered by Artistic Director Michael Pappalardo.

Napoli was originally premiered in 1842 by The Royal Danish Ballet in Denmark. Danish choreographer and ballet master August Bournonville supposedly created it after visiting Italy’s seaside town of Naples, where he had been impressed by the local colour and vibrancy of the city.

Now, nearly 174 years later, the work is set to be revived on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13 at the Darebin Arts Centre.

The ballet tells the story of Teresina, a young Italian girl who falls in love with Gennaro, a poor fisherman. While the two young lovers merely want to marry, drama ensues, as there is family strife, a wild storm and a sea monster involved.
