Melbourne Dance Centre raises the barre

Masters Of Choreography show at Melbourne Dance CentreMelbourne Dance Centre (MDC) is the city’s newest home to classes, performances and rehearsal space. Located in Brunswick, VIC, the centre officially launched in February 2016 and since then has already hosted many special events in addition to its range of casual adult classes.

“Melbourne Dance Centre is starting its next evolution into becoming a home for dance and theatre productions to be staged with the launch of its black box theatre. This year there will be a few shows staging their opening seasons in the venue,” said Daniel Ryan, a leader at MDC and artistic director of local jazz dance company Ignite the Dark. “Our plan is to try and create a form of incubator for dance works, to develop work and start a dialogue with an audience in a venue that is purpose built for dance.”

He continued, “As theatre producers we want nothing more than to see a thriving dance theatre scene develop in Melbourne that is not just vibrant but versatile, and encourage as many genres to show what they have to offer the theatre-going public.”

One of the first productions to hold performances in the MDC Theatre was Raise The Barre, produced by Masters Of Choreography in March. It was a success, with the season selling out and leading the producers to schedule more shows, which are set for this weekend, April 28 and 29.

“What we love about shows like Raise The Barre is that it is a commercial dance theatre show that is built for a general audience,” said Ryan. “It is a fun and exciting dance theatre piece that isn’t gated by needing a prior understanding of dance in order to appreciate it.”

Marketed as a “commercial rock ballet show with attitude”, Raise The Barre is the sister show to Beats On Pointe, also by the team at Masters Of Choreography. Raise The Barre promises an extravaganza of ballet, jazz and commercial dance that “will take you on an exhilarating journey of high-energy entertainment fused with comedy and dance theatre.”
