Murmuration to premiere ‘Days Like These’

Special needs dancers in Days Like These rehearsalMurmuration Dance Theatre will soon present its highly anticipated world premiere of Days Like These, the latest work from NSW’s only professional adult integrated arts company. Three performances will be presented on July 21 and 22 at The Arts Centre Cootamundra.

Days Like These will explore the varied ways we, as humans, express our emotions. It will invite viewers to revisit and reflect on the best and worst days of their lives. Drawing on the idea that our universal differences also make us the same, a creative team of diverse people will peel back their layers to share their stories of love, frustration, regret, joy and change.

Photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher’s images of the microscopic structures of dried human tears have been a point of inspiration for the work. Fisher explains, “Each one of our tears carries a microcosm of the collective human experience.”

Murmuration Director Sarah-Vyne Vassallo stated, “The emotion causing us to cry – laughter, anger or grief – when dried and put under a microscope includes different and distinct molecules. The image of the tear in this way provides a compelling blueprint of the human psyche.”

She continued, “Living with a disability is different from one person to the next, and our lived lives are different from one person to the next. We want the work to expand and compress the universal nature of difference; does the fact that we are all different make us all the same?”

Murmuration seeks to create work that “not only challenges society’s view of what artists with disability are capable of but also proposes a new artistic aesthetic.”

On its current project, Vassallo said, “We have had two developments of the work over 2015 and 2016 we are thrilled to be taking Days Like These into final development and presentation. It’s time the world got to see what Murmuration is all about.”

Located at The Arts Centre Cootamundra (TAC), Days Like These will take advantage of the theatre space, gallery, multimedia technologies and studio spaces. The residency is the first of its kind in the arts centre. To book tickets to a performance, visit www.buytickets.at/murmuration.
